Dear old Dad rarely gets the gold-star treatment, which is surprising when there are so many gold-plated deals.
For example: A 24-karat gold-plated barbecue grill is billed as the world’s most expensive. It was valued at $164,000 several years ago. The price varies depending on the gold market. It was made by BeefEater Barbecues, which is based in Australia. It says the grill is for people “who want to make a statement with their barbecue and have the money to burn.” www.beefeaterbbq.com.
Which brings us to gold-wrapped cigars, which will, indeed, burn. The cigars are from Manuel Quesada and are wrapped in 24-karat Florentine gold by Daniel Marshall. A single cigar is $200; a box of five with humidor is $1,000, from www.TheGoldenCigar.com or www.DanielMarshall.com. He also makes a 14-karat gold humidor for $500,000.
Marshall’s humidor is one of the golden rarities available through The House of Solid Gold, www.thehouseofsolidgold.com, where you can find 18-karat gold-plated dice ($20,000), 18-karat gold golf tees ($2,400), and 18-karat solid-gold earbuds ($14,995). It even peddles a 24-karat gold extreme mountain bike.
The “fat bike,” so named for its chubby tires designed by Dan Bull, creator of the Iditabike race through Alaska, is handcrafted and each piece is electroplated. For the Beverly Hills Edition, which is $495,000, the seat is covered in brown alligator hide and comes equipped with a gold-plated water bottle with shagreen embellishment. The custom emblem on the front of the frame bears The House of Gold emblem in black diamonds and gold sapphires. Only 13 of these bikes will be issued, and each one will be customized to the buyer.
Equally flashy is the LUX Nikon camera by Brikk at $57,995. It, too, is finished in 24-karat gold and shagreen leather. Brikk is one-upping Apple by customizing the new Apple watch, modified in yellow or pink gold. Brikk also makes gold-plated iPhone 6 covers, and iPhone 6 covers with seam lines that look like Halliburton luggage; www.brikk.com.
For the dads who like to wear gold, nothing is flashier than Giuseppe Zanotti’s gold-metallic high-top. Available at Neiman Marcus Fort Worth, the super-rich sneaker is $1,125.
There are less pricey golden options for antique dads — golden oldies, as it were. Gibson has reissued a 1952 Les Paul Tribute guitar. The golden mahogany body, maple top and rosewood fingerboard are exact replicas of Paul’s original 1952 patent. At $5,581, it is available through guitar shops that sell Gibson products, including Guitar Center.
Brunswick is also releasing a throwback — the Vintage Gold Rhino bowling ball, $219, that was quite coveted in its day. Available at local Brunswick pro shops.
