Eats Beat: Southern goodness in North Richland Hills; Christmas on Spur 303

Chef Blythe’s Southern Bistro is a complete surprise.

Blythe Bridges’ bar-and-restaurant seems far better than its strip-center location.

With quality home cooking plus a full bar, it seems more like someplace from the Bishop Arts District or Magnolia Avenue.

Yet it’s on the North Richland Hills border, on North Tarrant Parkway at Precinct Line Road.

After some opening jitters, Chef Blythe’s settled in with daily specials and a Sunday brunch buffet.

Monday is all-you-can-eat catfish night, and Saturday is for steak specials.

But some diners can’t get away from the fried green tomatoes, thick-cut chicken-fried steak or chicken, and a choice of eight vegetables including collard greens, black-eyed peas and near-perfect fried squash.

The appetizer choices also include chicken-fried bacon, so there’s no shortage of Southern fried goodness.

But the menu also has burgers — one is topped with fried green tomatoes, pimiento cheese and remoulade — along with salads including spinach-strawberry with feta and candied pecans.

A Spur 303 Christmas

Arlington is full of fascinating little restaurants, particularly in December.

The food could not be more different, but both A Taste of Europe on Spur 303 and Campo Verde in Dalworthington Gardens have elaborate Christmas displays.

A Taste of Europe has some Old World decorations, import gifts and an Belarus-Eastern European menu featuring pierogis, blintzes, potato pancakes and cabbage rolls. Campo Verde, a lavishly decorated Tex-Mex restaurant and bar, has more than 100,000 lights and a model train circling the room.

A 7-pound burger is free if you finish it within an hour. Besides a regular Tex-Mex menu, it offers a Cuban pepper steak and elk, buffalo, rattlesnake or cabrito fajitas; open for lunch and dinner daily at 2918 W. Pioneer Parkway, 817-275-7003, campoverde.us.

Also worth a stop: Las Brasas Rotisserie & Grill, featuring outstanding Peruvian dishes such as rotisserie chicken and desserts including first-rate, fresh churros.
