What better day than July 4 to sell hot dogs and icy desserts?
That’s what Daniel Basden of Burleson thought, too. So he will bring Dallas’ favorite frozen custard to an Old Town storefront Saturday, opening a Wild About Harry’s across from Babe’s Chicken Dinner House.
In a summer with no Blue Bell, local custard shops like Wild About Harry’s and Fort Worth’s Curly’s serve the best frozen desserts around, along with Dairy Queen and any restaurant serving flavors from Plano-based Henry’s Homemade Ice Cream.
The original Knox Street location of Wild About Harry’s serves 50 custard flavors and 10 different hot dogs.

In Burleson, Basden said he first tried Harry’s custard at Central Market, then liked the homespun neighborhood feeling of the Dallas store, a hangout for Highland Park families.
“Old Town is great for a family place like this,” he said. He’ll open early for families this Saturday at 10 a.m., after the city July Fourth parade.
His recommendation: a banana pudding shake with vanilla custard, bananas and vanilla wafers.

Another restaurant opened July 4, and it seems to have worked out OK.
Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican Dishes will mark 80 years Saturday since the Garcias started it as a barbecue cafe in 1935.
(When Joe was sick one day, his wife Jesusa, “Jessie,” made food from their native Michoacán. Their grandchildren’s restaurant now seats 2,000.)
The only change for Joe T’s at 80: The restaurant has joined spinoff Esperanza’s on Facebook.
