What it’s about: Santa Claus: A New Musical is a new Christmas musical production, developed by Casa Mañana’s education director Noah Putterman, is a fresh take on the behind-the-scenes actions at Santa’s workshop. After a thousand years of delivering toys to good girls and boys, Santa decides to retire and needs to find a replacement to fill his jolly ole boots.
What parents will like: As usual, Casa casts an impressive group of adult actors including a convincing Santa (Greg Dulcie) and Mrs. Claus (Deborah Brown) and a devilishly good villain appropriately named Henchy (Zak Reynolds). However, the storyline revolves on the relationship between Santa-to-be Nick (James Chandler) and his teenage daughter Beatrice (Josie Dawn) who tug at the audience’s heartstrings with their sweet father-daughter chemistry. The original songs and lyrics by David Christensen and Luke Holloway may not be Christmas standards but feel so familiar that they could be.
What kids will like: The musical is fast-paced so don’t expect the little ones to fall asleep. In fact, the 20-minute intermission comes about 30 minutes into the play. There are also some wisely placed audience interactions in the middle and end of the performance so children can be truly engaged. It’s also wonderful to see the return of the children actors to Casa’s stage. The reindeer ensemble gave such a warm and enthusiastic spirit to the production.
Good to know: For each donation given to Casa Manana’s programs, donors can create their own holiday ornament that will be placed on the Casa Christmas tree through the end of the Santa Claus run. Also, don’t forget to line up after the play to get a photo with Santa as well as get autographs and photos with cast members.
