This season's sweaters make a statement with fun patterns, trendy shapes and more

After a summer filled with scorching temperatures, we're more than happy to welcome the cool temperatures of fall.

But the changing of seasons doesn't just signal relief from the heat. It means the chance to finally wear comfortable sweaters (or anything that has sleeves for that matter).

As a bonus, this year, sweaters are a fashion statement. Pull on one with a big, bold graphic on the front, one with interesting patterns or texture, or -- our favorite -- a big, slouchy one that makes you run for the nearest latte.

Here are four of fall's most on-trend sweater looks.

Novelty sweaters

No longer for just the young but also the young at heart, novelty sweaters can be both bold and whimsical. We've seen a variety of cute sweater prints -- hearts, foxes, and stars, for example. Pull one on with skinny jeans and ballet flats for a "casual Friday" ensemble or to lounge on the weekends. Mossimo Supply Co. long-sleeve stars sweater, $22.99, Target; Rock & Republic Berlin coated skinny jeans, $88, Kohl's, Legacy Leather "Penny" shoulder purse in carnelian, $198, Coach.

Chunky pullover sweaters

A stylish alternative to a sweat shirt or hoodie, chunky, pullover sweaters give you the comfort you want while allowing you to still look pulled together. Pair an oversized version, such as this one from American Apparel, with coated jeans and boots for a look that is tres chic. Unisex oversized fisherman turtleneck sweater, $135, American Apparel; Rock & Republic Berlin coated skinny jeans, $88, Kohl's; unisex wool beret in eggplant, $24, American Apparel.

High-low sweaters

A big trend this summer with dresses and blouses, high-low hems continue into fall on sweaters. Try one to create a unique silhouette, and then finish it with leggings and -- if you dare -- combat boots. Bisou Bisou high-low dolman sweater, $25, J.C. Penney; Rock & Republic Kashmere coated twill leggings, $88, Kohl's; gold tribal necklace, $28, Jazzy Jems.

Loose-knit sweaters

Perfect for layering as the weather gets colder, loose-knit sweaters are as cozy as they are fashionable. Try wearing one with a scarf or off the shoulder with a tank peeking through. You'll feel '80s retro-fab. Nine West Vintage America collection Botany Pointelle sweater in alabaster, $69.50, Belk; Cejon infinity scarf in brown/ivy, $28, Belk; Lulu's turquoise/gold clover necklace, $28, Stella's.
