Eats beat: Pizza places pile on in TCU, UTA areas

How much pizza can college students eat?

Apparently, Fort Worth and Arlington have yet to reach the limit.

New pizzerias opened with school near Texas Christian University and also in the University of Texas at Arlington's College Park "urban village."

Toppers Pizza, a Wisconsin-based chain known for after-hours delivery until 3 a.m. and its heritage Topperstix breadsticks, opened a take-out counter at 2911 W. Berry St. in a former music club next to Fuzzy's Taco Shop.

Toppers is above-average delivery pizza anytime, but it shines after midnight with service throughout Westcliff, Tanglewood and Ryan Place until 3 a.m. weeknights, 3:30 a.m. weekends.

The menu also includes toasted subs, boneless chicken strip "wings" and quesadillas; 817-207-0051, toppers.com.

Toppers moves into a neighborhood already pizza-heavy with the Buffalo Bros Pizza Wings & Subs restaurant and bar, long-standing TCU favorite Perrotti's Pizza and the Georgia-based Mellow Mushroom family restaurant and bar.

(Familiar Fort Worth favorite Mama's Pizza, a mile east, also offers a new thin-crust option.)

Arlington is the home of the newest Pie Five Pizza, a Pizza Inn cousin offering small, simple, assembly-line pizzas for $6.49 with unlimited toppings.

Pie Five's third Tarrant County store opened this week at 503 S. Pecan St. in College Park.

Bigger news: Pie Five added a seasonal Hatch green chile-chicken-cheddar pizza. It already offered a pepperoni-jalapeño-red pepper Pie Ferno; piefivepizza.com.

(UT Arlington's favorites have been the nearby Mellow Mushroom and the New York-style Nizza Pizza.)

Fort Worth and Arlington are both home to new locations of two of Dallas' favorite taquerias.

Tacos la Banqueta is known for its tiny "street tacos," gorditas and tortas with 10 meats, including suadero along with lengua, cabeza and the usual grilled chicken or steak.

The counter-service stands are open daily except Sundays at 2621 Hemphill St., Fort Worth, 817-923-8846, and 1021 E. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington, 817-459-1122; tacoslabanqueta.com.

Cesar's Tacos is also a new arrival on the South Freeway at Felix Street. It's a larger restaurant with table service and platters such as enchiladas, nachos and quesadillas.

Cesar's is open daily and late weekends at 4728 South Freeway, Fort Worth, 817-920-7929, or 419 W. Randol Mill Road, Arlington, 817-459-1551.
