Sleeping 4-year-old found in abandoned truck in Parker County

A sleeping 4-year-old boy was found inside an abandoned truck late Tuesday. Suspects had left it in a Parker County driveway after a chase with authorities.

The child's mother, who was not involved in the pursuit, was arrested on outstanding warrants as she drove to Parker County to pick up her son.

The boy was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services, said Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler in a Wednesday email.

Charges of abandoning a child without intent to return are pending against the boy's father, Darik Robert Kahler, 22, of Ardmore, Okla.; and the other occupants in the truck: Timothy Wayne Russell Jr., 30, and James Allen Russell, 29, both of Springtown; and Jessica Newman, 23, of Azle.

Deputies continued to search for the suspects Wednesday afternoon.

Parker County sheriff's deputies saw a suspicious vehicle about 11 p.m. Tuesday on Highland Court in Springtown. It sped away when the driver realized he was being followed by the deputies, a news release said.

The driver and his passengers abandoned the Ford F-150 truck in the 100 block of Highland Court and fled after a short chase. When deputies searched the truck, they found the boy asleep in the backseat.

Deputies searched the area and contacted the truck's owner, who told them that she had allowed the suspects to use the truck for the evening, but she had not heard back from them. The truck was returned to the owner.
