Local service to honor slain Florida teens, children of Army colonel from Fort Worth

FORT WORTH -- A memorial service is scheduled for this afternoon at an Arlington Heights church for Calyx and Beau Schenecker, teenage siblings with ties to the area, who were found fatally shot on Jan. 27 at their Tampa, Fla., home.

The teens' father, Army Col. Parker Schenecker, is a Fort Worth native and 1980 graduate of Country Day School. He is stationed at the headquarters of the U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.

Their mother, Julie Schenecker, 50, remained in the Hillsborough County Jail in Florida on Monday, accused of killing her children. A judge declined to set bail.

On Friday, there was a memorial service at MacDill where Parker Schenecker spoke.

"Today is another day on our journey to healing. While sadness seems to lurk right behind us every step of the way, I assure you that today's wonderful tribute to my children will keep me looking ahead," he said, according to a statement from a family spokeswoman.

The Fort Worth service will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Christ Chapel Bible Church, 3740 Birchman Ave.

Calyx Powers Schenecker was born Sept. 12, 1994, in Germany, and Powers Beau Schenecker was born Sept. 29, 1997, in Hawaii.

Investigators have said Julie Schenecker shot Beau with a .38-caliber handgun as she drove him to soccer practice and shot her daughter as she sat at her desk doing homework.
