Camp Fire USA Paint Out brings art out in the open this weekend

The French impressionists, including Monet and Renoir, made it famous, but in gorgeous fall weather like this, painting "en plein air" -- in open air -- just makes sense.

This year's Camp Fire USA Paint Out brings 35 artists from across the state to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden to create art out in the open -- while you enjoy the gardens and watch the artists work. There'll be painters scattered throughout the garden's 109 acres, working leisurely all day Friday and Saturday. Then, on Sunday, they will demonstrate their skill and their speed at a quick-draw event: They'll each produce a new painting in 2 1/2 hours.

Want to join in? No problem. Each day, there'll be a "plein air" painting station set up so you can do your own outdoor painting. And on Saturday, kids (ages 5 to 18) can join a series of painting workshops led by local artists. It's $10; materials are provided. Pre-register for a workshop ASAP: See the website for details and a full schedule.

The whole thing wraps up with a jazz brunch Sunday, where the artwork will be for sale. Proceeds benefit Camp Fire USA programs. Get your brunch tickets ($40) by calling 817-831-2111, ext. 167.
