Arlington child dies nearly a week after being pulled from pool

A toddler died Wednesday after being pulled last week from a backyard pool in west Arlington.

Kayden Layer, 14 months, died at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.

Drowning was listed as the cause of death. It was an accident, the medical examiner reported.

Earlier reports stated she was 18 months old, but the medical examiner and an Arlington police spokeswoman confirmed on Thursday that she was four months younger than that.

The child's parents found her about 4:45 p.m. Sept. 23 in the backyard pool of their home in the 4900 block of Stage Line Drive, police said last week.

Officers who were called to the home said that the air conditioning was malfunctioning and that the back door was left open to provide air circulation. At some point, the girl slipped outside and got into the pool, police said.

Her parents pulled her out, and a neighbor performed CPR, police said.

The child was taken to Medical Center of Arlington and transferred to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth.

She died 1:20 p.m. Wednesday at the hospital's intensive care unit, according to the medical examiner.
