Arlington schools get one new principal, 8 new assistant principals

ARLINGTON -- Students and parents arriving for the first day of school Monday will find new faces in many campus administration offices.

This month, the school board appointed David Gutierrez to be principal of South Davis Elementary School. Gutierrez, who started his teaching career as a first-grade bilingual teacher at Thornton Elementary School in 1998, was named assistant principal in 2002 and has been Thornton's principal since 2007.

Alicia Rodriguez has been the school's interim principal.

The board also appointed eight assistant principals at seven schools:

Jacob Wilson, Sam Houston High. Wilson, who started with the district in 2001, has been assistant principal at Atherton Elementary since 2007.

Derek Hinton, Ferguson Junior High. Hinton comes from the Crowley school district, where he was an assistant principal and campus athletic coordinator.

Max Smith, Gunn Junior High. Smith moved from Sam Houston High to Seguin High in 2008 as a business teacher and football and wrestling coach.

Michelle Harris, Atherton Elementary. Harris started at the district as a special-education teacher in 2000 and has been a counselor at South Davis since 2003.

Clifton Womack, Atherton Elementary. Starting as a Fort Worth district teacher, Womack has been a mentor in the Tarleton Model for Accelerated Teacher Education since 2005.

Melinda Schweig, Bryant Elementary. Schweig comes from Mansfield, where she was head band director and elective department coordinator.

Jaqueline McDowell-Walton, Ellis Elementary. A former assistant principal in Arlington, McDowell-Walton has served as academic coordinator for testing and staff development in the Dallas district since 2006.

Selena Bastidas, Hill Elementary. Bastidas was a bilingual teacher in the Dallas and Richardson districts and has been an assistant principal in Duncanville since 2005.
