Boy, 5, dies when struck in driveway by mother's pickup

Sheriff's deputies believe a 5-year-old boy died Thursday evening when he was struck by a pickup that had backed out of the driveway of his family's home in rural Parker County, according to reports.

Sheriff Larry Fowler said Friday that the boy's mother was driving the vehicle.

Evan Fisher was pronounced dead at 7:44 p.m. at his home in the 100 block of Bowie Road, the Tarrant County medical examiner reported.

Fowler said an initial investigation showed that the mother "apparently struck or ran over the child while backing out of the driveway."

The parents "have been fully cooperative during this investigation and were visibly shaken," he said in a news release.

"There's nothing untoward here," the sheriff said in a brief telephone interview Friday. "It's just a tragic accident."

Investigators believe the boy was struck at about 7 p.m. as the mother was leaving to pick up some dinner in Weatherford in the family's Ford pickup. The home is about eight miles north of the city.

The father told deputies that he heard the boy say goodbye to his mother and shut the front door, the news release stated.

"The father reported he went to check on him minutes later and found him lying in the driveway, injured and unresponsive," the news release stated.

He immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation and called paramedics. He also called the mother on her cell phone and she immediately returned to the home, Fowler said.

The father continued CPR until the arrival of LifeCare paramedics, who pronounced the child dead, Fowler said.
