Woman takes children left unattended in SUV on ride, frees them, abandons vehicle in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH -- Five children left inside an SUV were taken on a ride Monday evening after someone stole the vehicle, police said.

The children's 33-year-old mother left her keys to the Ford Expedition in the ignition while she looked at a rental house about 5:20 p.m., said Sgt. Chad Mahaffey, a police spokesman.

Another woman who was walking in the area jumped in and drove off, he said.

Police were called and, while they searched for the vehicle, they received a 911 call from the 4700 block of Panola Avenue where the thief apparently stopped and let four children out, Mahaffey said. Two were still in their car seats; two were on foot.

Minutes later, police found the Expedition abandoned in the 5100 block of Rosedale Street, he said. The fifth child was still seated in the SUV. The child was uninjured, he said.

A female suspect was last seen walking away from the Expedition.
