Tarleton football player died of brain injury, ME rules

The death of a Tarleton State football player was caused by a traumatic brain injury suffered during spring practice, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.

Zachary Shaver, 18, was injured when he fell and his death was accidental, according to the ruling.

Shaver, a defensive lineman from Wichita Falls, was reportedly engaged with an offensive lineman at practice Saturday when both players fell over a pile of other players. The offensive lineman landed on top of Shaver.

A helicopter ambulance transported Shaver to Harris Methodist Fort Worth, where he died two days later.

Shaver red-shirted last season. He played high school football at Rider High School in Wichita Falls.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls.
