If you live or work near the University of Texas at Arlington and hear what sounds like cannon fire at about noon, don't worry: The university is not under siege.
No, it's UTA celebrating its homecoming by firing off what are known as the Carlisle Cannons. This year, the theme for homecoming is "Then & Now."
The name of the cannons refers to the university's time as the Carlisle Military Academy. The university, which opened in 1895, has also been known as the Arlington Training School and Arlington Military Academy. At one time students had to enroll in the cadet corps.
The cannons will also be fired at 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
