NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — The driver of a Lincoln Towncar being pursued by Haltom City police stepped out of the car on Northeast Loop 820 during rush hour Thursday and fired at police, who shot back, hitting the man, a police spokesman said.
In the car, officers found a young woman who had been shot. Paramedics tried to help her but she was pronounced dead at the scene, North Richland Hills police spokesman Keith Bauman said.
The shooting happened about 6:50 p.m., and at 8 p.m. westbound lanes of the loop were still closed, and were expected to remain shut for at least an hour, Bauman said.
The incident began earlier when a 911 call reported shots being fired in the 5600 block of Elliott Reeder Road in Fort Worth.

The caller said he saw a body being dragged into a car.
That location is near the border of Haltom City and Fort Worth. A Haltom City police car was nearby and responded to the call.
Officers reported seeing a silver Lincoln Town Car matching the description given by the 911 caller and tried to pull it over.
The Town Car led police on a pursuit along Airport Freeway and through the North East Mall area, Bauman said.
The cars entered Loop 820 near Holiday Lane, traffic was heavy and the chase slowed, Bauman said. Then the Town Car stopped, and the driver stepped out with a weapon, and there was an exchange of gunfire, Bauman said.
Officers fired at the man and struck him at least once, Bauman said. No officers were hurt, he said.
After westbound lanes of the freeway were closed and cleared, a helicopter ambulance landed on the roadway, and the wounded man was loaded onto it and flown to a hospital in critical condition, Bauman said.
