Denise Austin's Body Makeover Mix (Lions Gate, $14.98) is a good, solid toning and sculpting routine. Composed of three 15-minute segments -- upper body, lower body and abs -- the workout combines classic dumbbell-, Pilates- and ballet-inspired moves designed to tighten flab and sculpt long, lean muscles.
Austin, ever cheerful and positive, makes you believe that you really will -- as the DVD box claims -- "get a better body in just one month!" (We'd argue that you need to put some cardio into the mix, as well.)
This isn't Austin's best DVD workout, though. Sometimes the counts are off (you'll do 15 reps on one side and 17 on the other), or the other exercisers in the video won't follow her precisely. We wish that Austin would have told us how heavy our dumbbells should be (hers look to be only 1 pound or so, but we're never told.) The music and the setting -- which looks like a bank lobby -- are pretty dull.
But if you're looking to get started with some basic toning, it's a decent at-home workout.
