In a letter to his listeners and readers posted on his Web site, Neil Sperry, the iconic Texas horticulturist, said that radio station KRLD has given him six months' notice that it is canceling Neil Sperry's Texas Gardening.
The show has been heard on weekend mornings in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and throughout Texas for almost 30 years.
Sperry has also been a regular contributor to the Star-Telegram for 30 years and has a weekend gardening column in the Your Life section.
Sperry said he was informed by KRLD on Jan. 5 that it was terminating his show and that it was "strictly a bottom-line business decision."
"I have loved radio and gardening with a passion for all of my life," Sperry wrote. "For my entire professional career, I've had the blessing of mixing both of these loves. I've been paid to talk about my favorite hobby. How could it be any better?"
Sperry, who has authored books on gardening, still publishes Neil Sperry's Gardens magazine six times annually and an online newsletter.
He reiterated to the Star-Telegram what he wrote in his letter that he is looking for a new home for his radio show. His show will be on through the end of June.
