During her career, Marjorie Lewis has been a sportswriter, teacher, author, playwright and screenwriter. Now, she can add an endowment to her list of career accomplishments.
The inaugural Marjorie Herrera Lewis Endowed Speaker Series kicks off at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at Texas Wesleyan’s Martin Hall. Bestselling local author David Thomas is the featured speaker and will talk about the art of writing. A panel of TWU journalism students will conduct a Q&A, and the audience also can ask questions.
“This is my thank you to the Star-Telegram for the opportunities it gave me,” says Lewis, who started her journalism career at the newspaper, where she covered everything from TWU men’s basketball to tennis and was a beat writer for the Dallas Cowboys. “Now, I’d like the Texas Wesleyan students to benefit as well.”
Thomas, a longtime editor, sportswriter and humor columnist for the Star-Telegram, has written eight books, including two New York Times bestsellers — Wrestling for My Life with WWE superstar Shawn Michaels and Foxcatcher with Mark Schultz, Olympic and two-time World Championship wrestler. He’s working on Called for Life: How Loving Our Neighbor Led Us Into the Heart of the Ebola Epidemic with Fort Worth residents Dr. Kent Brantly and his wife, Amber. It will be published in July.

More important, Thomas once took a sportswriting class at UTA from Lewis.
“It’s an honor to be asked by Marjorie and Texas Wesleyan to be a part of this event,” he says. “Marjorie provided a big boost to my career when I was a journalism student at UTA. She has always had a true heart for helping young people pursue their careers, and I believe that Texas Wesleyan students and Fort Worth are going to benefit for a long time because of Marjorie’s efforts in creating this new speakers series.”
