After reviewing a product called Food Huggers last year, I was recently pitched a product call SipSnap (available in sets of three for $19.95 on SipSnap.com) by Food Huggers co-founder Michelle Ivankovic and her friend Sativa Turner.
Together, the two women have designed a universal “one size fits all” drinking lid for toddlers and kids. Made from stretchy, food-grade silicone, the reusable lids are designed to convert lidless cups into spill-proof drinking vessels.
If you are a parent or relative of a small child, you surely understand how a product like the SipSnap could come in handy.
If you don’t have kids around, you might think a product like this wouldn’t interest you. I thought the same thing. Then I realized the possibilities for adults who are constantly on the go. Imagine: No more shelves jammed with travel cups, no more carrying an open container in the car that’s likely to slosh everywhere if you stop too quickly.
Reportedly, one SipSnap will make any cup you already own instantly spill-proof and travel-ready. So, with the interests of adult readers in mind, I decided to review this product.
Just like Food Huggers, SipSnaps are made from colorful silicone that is BPA-, phthalate- and latex- free. SipSnaps come three to a box and include a carrying case.
For this review, I chose to go with the Kid version. (There is also a Tot version that converts regular cups into a sippy cup.)
Using a SipSnap seems very straightforward. You stretch the lid over the top of your cup, then pull down on the sides until it is completely flat and taut. Once the lid is correctly placed, just insert the straw and you’re ready to go.
The first time I tried putting a SipSnap on a cup, it was a bit of a struggle — something I expected since it is mentioned in the instructions. Fortunately, after a few tries, it does get easier.
Fab or flub?
Fab! SipSnaps might have been designed with children in mind, but they worked great for this adult, too.
This simple product is ideal for taking cold drinks on the go, and now I don’t have to worry about keeping a travel cup on hand. Instead, I just pour my morning smoothie or juice into a regular glass, stretch a SipSnap over the top and I’m on my way.
SipSnaps secure tightly (they literally won’t budge), so there’s no worry about spills or leaks. And like the Food Huggers, they’re extremely easy to clean, too. You can wash them by hand or throw them in the dishwasher.
I also found that SipSnaps worked well on all sorts of cups — glass, plastic and stainless-steel.
Overall, I think SipSnaps would be a great purchase for every household (with or without kids). They add versatility to your existing cups, and they are made by an eco-friendly company — another big plus in my book.
