It’s been a big year for fans of the late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, known to fans simply as Selena.
In August, Madame Tussauds Hollywood had a sidewalk ceremony to unveil a wax figure of the Grammy Award winner and native Texan. Now, MAC Cosmetics is set to launch a limited-edition Selena-inspired makeup collection Saturday.
While makeup collaborations with entertainers are hardly new (Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Lady Gaga have all teamed up with MAC), the story behind the MAC Selena collection runs much deeper than just lipstick and eye shadow.
Almost two years ago, super fan Patty Rodriguez started a Change.org petition asking MAC Cosmetics to make a Selena-inspired makeup collection. With 37,768 signatures in total, the petition caught the eye of MAC Cosmetics and soon the brand contacted the Quintanilla family for help with the collection.
A true labor of love, the 13-piece collection ranges in price from $17 to $35 and includes lipsticks, eye shadows, “lipglass,” liquid eyeliner, mascara, a blush/bronzer duo and a powder/blush brush.
Ahead of its launch date (Oct. 1 online and Oct. 6 in stores), I decided to check out the highly anticipated collection to see how it rates and what (if any) products are worth checking out.
Like other limited-edition collections, the MAC Selena products are full of special details inspired by the late singer. From the purple packaging (reportedly Selena’s favorite color) to her iconic signature stamped on every item, the products are sure to be collector’s items for fans.
For the regular makeup fan, however, there’s a lot to get excited about, too. The collection features three lipsticks and five eye shadows, as well as a liquid eyeliner, a blush/bronzer duo, mascara, the ultra-shiny “lipglass” and a powder/blush brush.
Looking at the collection, it’s pretty clear that the liquid eyeliner, mascara and powder/blush brush (which is travel-size) are the more forgettable items of the bunch.
The real headliners are the lip products, eye shadows and the blush/bronzer duo. Featuring Selena song-inspired names, the eye shadows include Is It the Beat (deep black), No Me Queda Mas (warm dusty brown), Missing My Baby (a light, pinky nude beige), Fotos y Recuerdos (bright, warm pink) and Selena (an intense pearly violet).
For the lips, the collection includes a “lipglass” in Bidi Bidi Bom Bom (bubblegum pink) and three lipsticks in Dreaming of You (deep wine), Como La Flor (muted cherry red) and Amor Prohibido (pinky mid-tone brown). Rounding out the bunch is a matte bronzer/blush duo called Techno Cumbia (golden brown/beige pink).
Fab or flub?
Fab! While some limited-edition collections can feel rushed or lacking in quality, it’s clear that MAC Cosmetics and the Quintanilla family took time to make sure that the products are worthy of the late singer’s legacy.
Whether you are a fan of Selena’s or just a fan of makeup in general, the collection succeeds at offering something for everyone by incorporating products for day or night that can flatter a variety of skin tones.
Just like MAC Cosmetics’ permanent line, the lipsticks and eye shadows in the collection are highly-pigmented and have staying power. The two standouts of the collection (and the ones most worth your money) are the bronzer/blush duo and the lipstick in the Como La Flor shade.
The Techno Cumbia duo is beautiful and does a fantastic job of sculpting the face when applied lightly to the hollows of your cheeks, while Como La Flor is a gorgeous muted red reminiscent of Selena’s signature Chanel lipstick in Brick.
For those interested in checking out the collection, I highly suggest planning ahead.
Items are expected to go quickly, so if you plan to shop online be sure to set your alarm, or if you are shopping in the store it might be wise to call ahead and ask how much stock will be available.
