How Corporate America Threw Me a Birthday Party

First off, let me clarify three things – yes, it really was my birthday (Oct 29 to be exact.) Two, this has nothing to do with me blogging for Mom2Mom. Three, I love free things.

With all that being said, a few weeks ago, I had my first of many mailings to come from one of the many restaurant/store lists that I have joined over the years. I have to admit, being the self-professed Queen of Free since I was very young (I used to call 1-800 numbers when I was little to get samples of things sent to me so I could get things in the mail like I thought “important people” do), so I knew some of them would be coming…However, I had no idea how much fun it would be to spend a day “claiming” my gifts and coming home with all the loot I was given. My husband even had to confirm when he saw the motherload that I wasn’t just using freebies as a cover-up to go and buy everything I could get my hands on. I wish I had taken a photo, but since some of them were redeemed at different times, I don’t think a photo will really give it credit, but I know a total of money will.

So wanna know how much all my stuff I got would equal if I had went and bought al my loot? Well, let’s do a rundown:

1.       Fuddruckers 1/3 Hamburger$5
2.       Taco Cabana Flauta Meal$6
3.       La Madeline Pastry$5
4.       Starbucks Coffee$4
5.       Benihana’s Meal $30
6.       Aveda free customized product $15
7.       Victoria’s Secret underwear$12.50
8.       Banana Republic shirt$15
9.       Dickey’s sandwich$4.50
10.   Houlihan’s Entrée$12.50
11.   Genghis Grill bowl$10
12.   Blue Mesa Grill Brunch$15
13.   Baskin Robins Scoop$3
14.   Texas Land and Cattle Appetizer$9
15.   Boston’s Chicken dessert$5
TOTAL $152

And that’s only what we actually used – there were others that I didn’t end up using like free shipping from Macy’s and Spaghetti Warehouse dinner. The only sad thing is that you have a limited time to use your coupon, so you have to prepare your family for a week of eating out or at least carry-out.

What’s the learning lesson from my birthday? Get yourself another email address just to have offers sent to. Then take all your goodies to your friends for surprise gifts (it’s the gift that keeps on giving!)
