McALLEN — A 28-year-old man kidnapped his former girlfriend, shot her to death in a grocery store on New Year's Even then crashed into the front of a Wal-Mart and killed himself, police said.
The ordeal began Tuesday afternoon when Moises Gonzalez abducted Maura Marroquin, 23, of Rio Grande City, at gunpoint. He stole at least two cars as police gave chase across several South Texas cities.
Gonzalez, of San Antonio, wound up in a Harlingen grocery store Wednesday night where police said he shot Marroquin and fled in a hijacked sport utility vehicle. The stolen vehicle was equipped with a global positioning system tracking device that allowed police to follow it.
Gonzalez drove the stolen car into a Weslaco Wal-Mart and killed himself. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots as the vehicle crashed through the front of the store.
