Missing 911 caller is safe in Mexico, police say

ARLINGTON -- A 41-year-old south Arlington man who vanished and was believed to have been kidnapped after calling 911 to report that he was being followed and shot at by several men, is safe and has been located in Mexico, police said Friday.

Police released the information Friday afternoon about Jose Lira, although authorities had spoken to him days after the alleged kidnapping.

Lira, who has been missing since last week, has refused to tell police how he got to Mexico, Arlington police Lt. Blake Miller said in a press release Friday.

Days after the 911 call, Lira contacted police and told them he had been kidnapped and left in Dallas. He had refused to meet with detectives to assist them in the investigation into his disappearance.

Lira called for help from his cellphone about 1:30 a.m. Dec. 10 as he drove toward his home in the 800 block of Greenridge Drive in south Arlington, police said. When officers arrived at the house, they found neither Lira nor his pursuers.
