Arlington school evacuated for nearby gas leak

ARLINGTON -- Roark Elementary School was evacuated Wednesday morning because of a natural gas leak, police said.

No injuries were reported at the east Arlington school, which was the only building evacuated in the area.

A construction crew hit a natural gas line, prompting the evacuation, police said.

About 700 to 800 students and staff were bused to nearby Sam Houston High, according to Veronica Sopher, school spokeswoman. She said students would eat box lunches and be taught in the high school's gymnasium until dismissal time.

They will be bused back to Roark for release at the normal dismissal time from the elementary school. Any parent wanting to pick their student up early can go to Sam Houston, but must be ready to show identification, Sopher said.
