Dallas police have arrested a man whom they suspect is the serial rapist who attacked women near Love Field in August and September.
Mariano Cervantes, 20, was arrested Thursday and was being held Friday at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center in Dallas on one charge of aggravated sexual assault, according to jail records. Bond was set at $250,000.
Investigators say they believe Cervantes is the man who, armed with a handgun and covered in tattoos, abducted and raped three women in broad daylight on Aug. 12, 25 and Sept. 20.
All the crimes happened in northwest Dallas near Love Field or in the Maple Avenue area, said Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse, Dallas police spokesman.
The women were all walking when they were approached by a light purple or lavender older model four-door sedan, according to reports.
Patrol officers on Thursday noticed a similar car parked at a home in the neighborhood where the offenses occurred.
"That discovery allowed detectives to determine that Mr. Cervantes had recently operated the vehicle," Janse said. "Mr. Cervantes matched the suspect description provided by the victims including unique tattoos.
"Mr. Cervantes was later identified as the offender, an arrest warrant was issued and he was arrested Thursday."
Police expect to file two other charges against him for sexual assault, Janse said.
