Bicyclist dies from injuries received last week

FORT WORTH _ A man died Wednesday from injuries he received late last week while riding his bicycle in southwest Fort Worth.

Leo Meier, 66, died 2:50 p.m. Wednesday at John Peter Smith Hospital, where he was taken following a collision with a car Friday afternoon, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.

The accident happened at 4:12 p.m. Friday in the 3900 block of South Drive, at the intersection with Inwood Road, said Sgt. Rodney Bangs, supervisor of the traffic investigation unit.

The area is north of the intersection of Interstate 20 and Granbury Road. It's also about six miles north of the home address listed for Meier in southwest Fort Worth.

Meier was riding a Fuji bicycle northwest on Inwood Road. A tan 2003 Ford Focus was southbound on South Drive, according to a police report.

Officers believe Meier did not yield the right-of-way at the intersection, and the car and the bike collided, Bangs said.

"He was taken to the hospital with critical injuries," Bangs said of Meier. "We don't anticipate any criminal charges in relation to the accident."

It was the 53rd traffic fatality involving a motor vehicle so far during 2008 in Fort Worth, Bangs said.

"As of this date last year, Sept. 11, we were on number 60," Bangs said, "so we're seven under last year, so far."
