Toddler safe after grandmother's car stolen in Dallas

A 2-year-old girl was safe with her family Wednesday after her grandmother's car was stolen Tuesday night in east Dallas while the child was in the car seat.

The incident happened at about 8:30 p.m. outside a McDonald's restaurant in the 2200 block of Buckner Boulevard, said Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse, police spokesman.

Two men approached the grandmother as she was getting the child out of the car seat, Janse said.

One got behind the wheel of the car and drove away with the child still inside, Janse said. The other man ran from the scene, Janse said.

Police were notified and officers on patrol subsequently saw the grandmother's tan 1994 Mercury four-door. They chased it and the driver tried to get away, but he wrecked the car, Janse said.

Meanwhile, he said, police dispatchers got a call about an abandoned child in the 7400 block of Daingerfield Drive, 1.4 miles west of the restaurant.

"It was the 2-year-old (girl)," Janse said.

Apparently the 16-year-old suspect released the child in that area. She was unharmed and returned to her grandmother, Janse said.

The suspect was arrested at the scene of the wreck. His name was not released because he is a juvenile. No other arrests were reported.
