FORT WORTH -- Fire investigators are still trying to determine why a vacant house owned by the city went up in flames early Saturday morning.
The early-morning fire on the city's north side completely gutted the small house in the 2800 block of Lincoln Avenue, valued at $37,900 by the Tarrant Appraisal District.
"We fought a defensive fire, not wanting to put firefighters in danger because the building was already engulfed," said Lt. Kent Worley, a spokesman for the fire department.
Neighbors told firefighters that transients sometimes stayed in the house. The city took possession of the house in late 2007, according to the appraisal district, but it was unclear why.
