How long does it take a block of ice to melt on a Texas sidewalk?

FORT WORTH -- Answer: Three hours, 54 minutes and 26 seconds -- for a 10-pound block of ice, sitting on a sidewalk.

The Star-Telegram conducted the experiment starting at noon Wednesday, at the corner of Third and Main streets. It wasn't the hottest day of the week -- mid-90s throughout the afternoon -- but the humidity made it particularly uncomfortable outside.

We asked curious onlookers to guess how long it would take, with the person coming closest winning a $50 gift card to Marble Slab Creamery.

The winner was Joseph DePalma, who guessed it would take four hours, 10 minutes.

The worst guess was 20 minutes.
