Arlington rally set to support embattled schools chief

Supporters of Arlington Superintendent Hector Montenegro plan to gather at noon Thursday at the school administration building, 1203 W. Pioneer Parkway, to back the embattled administrator and register their displeasure with the school board.

Trustees have called a 9 p.m. meeting Thursday to vote on whether to place Montenegro on paid administrative leave while an investigation continues into whether he broke state law by taking honorariums from outside educational firms. Montenegro joined the district Feb. 1.

The rally is being organized by the Rev. Kyev P. Tatum Sr., pastor of Friendship Rock Baptist Church in Fort Worth. He represents a group called Ministers for Education of America, a news release said.

Other organizers included Hector Flores of the national LULAC, or League of United Latin American Citizens, office and the Rev. Dwight McKissic, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in southeast Arlington.

“We just want to encourage Mr. Montenegro not to give up hope,” Tatum said before the event. “We’re not going to disrupt business or be a nuisance to the community.”

A school district spokeswoman said she was unaware of the rally plan but said the administration building typically is open for public use.
