What Wade Phillips said ... What Wade Phillips could have said

What Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips had to say after the Cowboys’ 35-22 win over the San Francisco 49ers, plus what he could have said:

On Terrell Owens’ seven-catch, 213-yard performance:

What Wade said: “The demise of Terrell Owens has been overly-exaggerated, I believe. I think we can see that he still has it, and if we can get him the football, he can make plays.”

What Wade could have said: “Against a defensive scheme like the 49ers played, I would still have it, too.”

On whether he was “shocked” that the 49ers played off of Owens at the line of scrimmage:

What Wade said: “It’s hard with all those weapons to start playing one guy. That's what we thought would happen. It’s just, unless, you know, you can get pressure with your front — our offensive line did another good job of protecting. So that was important. Of course, the other thing we did defensively, we didn’t let [Frank] Gore beat us. I thought that was important, too. He’s a really good back. They didn’t have much yards. I don’t think they had very many yards rushing at all, and that helped us win the game also.”

What Wade could have said: “Yes, I was shocked.”

On the role third-down conversions played in the game:

What Wade said: “They didn’t make very many and we made a lot of them. We’ve consistently done that.”

What Wade could have said: “And we’ve consistently done that for two weeks now.”

On whether at 7-4, he believes the Cowboys have “the ship righted.”

What Wade said: “Well, we’re going one game at a time. The next game’s the most important for us. We’re just looking at ourselves and trying to do well. And if we do well, everything will take care of itself.”

What Wade could have said: “You’re not going to be able to use that sound bite, are you?”

On whether the Cowboys made a special effort to get the ball to Owens:

What Wade said: “No. I mean, we try to do it every week. Contrary to what is believed or not believed, we try to get the ball to our best players, and obviously he’s one of our best players. We set up things. It just doesn’t always work that way. It does depend on what coverage [the opponent plays].”

What Wade could have said: “And I don't think we’ll see that coverage again this season.”

More on making Owens a part of the offense:

What Wade said: “Tony [Romo] just can’t look for him on every play.”

What Wade could have said: “Despite what T.O. and Deion Sanders think.”
