Traffic reopens as crews work on Arlington gas leak

ARLINGTON -- Atmos Energy crews continued to repair a large gas line that was damaged Wednesday night after it was struck by a pickup truck. Traffic was opened for residents Thursday morning after several homes in the southeast Arlington neighborhood were evacuated late Wednesday night.

The truck hit the gas line at New York Avenue and Caplin Drive about 8 p.m. Police arrested the driver after he fled the scene.

Robert Aaron Blankenstein of Mansfield was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with driving while intoxicated. Blankenstein is being held in the Arlington jail and no bond had been set Thursday morning.

Police blocked off streets near the leaking line. About 10 houses were evacuated, an officer at the scene late Wednesday night said.

While an officer was answering questions about the first leak, another officer called him away, saying a second leak had been reported near Fitzgerald Elementary School on Creek Valley Drive.
