Driver, 22, dies while racing near downtown Fort Worth

FORT WORTH -- One man died and another was arrested early Saturday after a car race ended in a wreck just west of downtown.

Marcus Hernandez, 22, of Fort Worth was pronounced dead at the scene from head injuries about 1 a.m. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office said his vehicle struck a fixed object in the median near West Seventh Street and University Drive.

The driver of the other vehicle, Michael Smith, 25, stopped to help and was arrested for racing and driving while intoxicated, Fort Worth police Lt. Paul Henderson said.

Smith has several previous arrests, including for theft, burglary and six counts of driving with a suspended license, county records show.

"Another example of poor choices behind the wheel," Henderson said.
