Dallas officer fatally shoots shoplifting suspect

An off-duty Dallas police officer fatally shot a man suspected of shoplifting at a Wal-Mart store Friday morning after the man began fighting with the officer and cut the officer.

The incident occurred at the Wal-Mart at 1521 N. Cockrell Hill Road, said Senior Cpl. Janice Crowther, police spokesperson, in a release.

According to the release, the 53-year-old man walked out of the store with stolen merchandise and was approached by Officer David L. Yzaguirre and a store security officer.

Crowther said the man immediately began fighting with the Yzaguirre who was cut with a box cutter on the shoulder during the incident.

Yzaguirre fire once, Crowther said, striking the man in the arm and chest. The man later died at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Crowther said.

The officer as treated at Methodist Hospital and released in good condition, Crowther said. Yzaguirre has been with the department since 1999, she said.

The dead man carried California identification. Crowther said the man identity was be withheld pending notification of family.
