Man killed while crossing Loop 820 in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH -- An unidentified man crossing NE Loop 820 was killed shortly after midnight when he was hit by a pickup truck, police said.

The accident was reported at 12:20 a.m. in the 800 block of the loop, near its intersection with Blue Mound Road in North Fort Worth, said Sgt. Rodney Bangs, supervisor of the traffic investigation unit.

The man was walking southbound across the freeway as a 2004 Ford Ranger pickup was headed east, Bangs said. The man wore dark clothes, he added, and the area was not well lit.

"The driver did not see him in time to avoid striking him," Bangs said.

The truck went out of control and rolled, but the driver and the two passengers in the cab were not hurt, Bangs said.

"We don't foresee any criminal charges, considering the circumstances," Bangs said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

He did not carry a driver's license, Bangs said, but he did have a photo copy of a birth certificate.

If he was the person described in the document, he would be 38 years old, Bangs said. The man was black, he added, and he had some tattoos.

The Tarrant County medical examiner's staff will be checking that information, along with his fingerprints to try to identify him, Bangs said.
