Self-inflicted gunshot wound sends felon back to prison

Shoot yourself in the leg, get almost 20 years in prison.

That was the outcome for a convicted felon who accidentally shot himself last year and, this week, was sentenced in federal court.

In April 2007, Fort Worth police responded to a reported shooting on West Hammond Street and found Edward Garcia, 41, bleeding from a gunshot wound to his inner thigh. They also found a loaded .22-caliber pistol.

An officer asked what happened, and Garcia replied that it was "obvious" that he was putting the gun in his waistband and it went off.

Garcia survived the wound, but his problems had only begun. He was a felon in possession of a firearm and therefore could be charged and sentenced as "an armed career criminal."

Garcia was sentenced to 19 years and seven months in federal prison.
