When shopping for a new home, it's easy to get swept away by a property’s most charming characteristics — and to play down important things buyers may regret later. The below tips can help buyers stay organized and focused on what matters most.
Location matters. “Location is a key consideration when choosing a home, and there are multiple factors that can affect your decision,” says Linda Magazzine, an associate with the Arlington office of Ebby Halliday Realtors. “Just a few of these include schools, commute times to work, and amenities such as nearby restaurants, shopping and attractions.”
List your priorities. You’ll save hours of shopping for a home if you list what you need and want in a home ahead of time. Zero in on the features you must have, would like to have, would prefer not to have — and definitely don't want.
“Your goal should be to find the right home without falling in love with one that doesn't suit your needs,” says Chip Reid, an associate with Ebby’s Southlake office.
Get pre-approved for a mortgage. “Rather than guessing how much you can afford to spend, ask a mortgage banker to give you a full assessment and a pre-approval letter stating how much you're qualified to borrow,” says Alex Parker, sales manager at Home Team Mortgage, Ebby Halliday’s affiliated mortgage company.
