Longtime KTVT/Channel 11 anchor Karen Borta is going to have to adjust her sleep schedule: After several years of co-anchoring afternoon and evening newscasts, she’s moving to the anchor chair at CBS 11 News This Morning, beginning Monday, Jan. 12.
Also, station spokeswoman Lori Conrad said Adrienne Bankert, who has been a morning co-anchor since June 2012, will do her last CBS 11 broadcast Dec. 31.
“She has told us that she is leaving to pursue other opportunities,” Conrad said via email. “We wish her all the best.”
Jason Allen, who has been filling in as a co-anchor since Brendan Higgins was fired in August, will continue as a fill-in, but a permanent morning co-anchor still hasn’t been named.
Borta has been co-anchoring the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts with Doug Dunbar (who moved from the morning newscast about a decade ago). Conrad said a replacement for Borta in those slots is expected to be announced soon.
“When I was approached with this opportunity, it seemed almost too good to be true,” Borta says in a CBS 11 release. “Professionally, it’s an exciting challenge which will allow me to spread my wings a bit. But more important to me personally is that this is incredibly awesome for my family life.
“My three children are now in high school and junior high. This new schedule will finally allow me to do the things that so many people take for granted, such as eating dinner with my family and attending my kids’ weeknight games – all things I often missed when working nights.”
Borta, who will celebrate her 20th year with KTVT in 2015, could bring some stability to a morning show that has seen numerous changes in the past decade or so (another recent change: traffic reporter Whitney Drolen’s departure in October).
One of the best-known personalities at CBS 11, Borta is an Arlington native and a UT-Arlington graduate.
Borta has also worked at stations in Tampa, Sacramento and Waco, and has won several regional Emmys, Texas Associated Press Broadcasters Awards and Press Club of Dallas Katie Awards among other honors.
Update: CBS 11 has posted video of Borta’s announcement to the station staff:
