The itinerary: The Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk opens in Philadelphia

Walking on water

in Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s bikers, joggers and walkers have a new scenic path — the Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk — that travels past the iconic art museum and colorful Boathouse Row, following the curves of Schuylkill River’s east bank and taking an abrupt turn into the river. The $18 million structure is a crucial link in what planners hope will be a 130-mile trail from Schuylkill County to Philadelphia. About 60 miles are finished, according to the Schuylkill River Trail Association. “It’s opened a whole new playground for Philadelphians,” says Patrick Starr of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council.

Singing in the new year

Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett are set to take the stage at The Cosmopolitan casino on New Year’s Eve for their first show together in the U.S. since they released a joint album late last month. The Las Vegas Strip resort says the duo will ring in the new year with jazz standards from their album Cheek to Cheek. Las Vegas welcomes more than 300,000 visitors each New Year’s Eve holiday, and casinos step up with top-tier music acts, world-renowned DJs and an elaborate fireworks show.

Fun fact

Do you tip the hotel maid?

Marriott has launched a program with Maria Shriver’s A Woman’s Nation organization to put envelopes in rooms to encourage tipping. The campaign, called “The Envelope Please,” will involve hotels from Marriott brands like Courtyard, Residence Inn, J.W. Marriott, Ritz-Carlton and Renaissance hotels. So how much should you leave? Marriott International CEO Arne Sorenson says $1 to $5 per night, depending on the room rate, more for a high-priced suite.
