Uncorked concert Friday benefits children, senior citizens

Four bands and more than 15 restaurants will make the Uncorked: Music in the Vine event on Friday the concert of the summer. Hosted by the women’s division of the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce, the event will raise money to continue the good members do in the community. The lovely venue is The Laurel, at 2040 Enchanted Way, Grapevine.

All the entertainers have donated their talent for the benefit concert so that proceeds can be fully used by the women’s division as it supports local children with school supplies and senior citizens by fulfilling Christmas wishes during the holiday season.

“This year, we will again provide school supplies for more than 1,000 GCISD students to set them up for success this coming school year,” says Karen Deakin, chairwoman of the women’s division. “Through the support of our community, our program for local senior citizens provided $10,000 in gifts in 2015, and we look forward to delivering those Christmas wishes again this holiday season.”

Popular party group the Walton Stout Band will play music across the genres when it takes the stage at 10 p.m. Performing its unmistakable brand of Texas rock will be the Zack King Band at 9 p.m.

Local entertainer Justin Mason will do original and classic country tunes during his 8 p.m. show, and Jessica McVey and Big Town Rodeo will open the event at 7 p.m. with an energetic show of originals and covers of current country music. Radio personality Jasmine Sadry, co-host of the Hawkeye in the Morning show, will be master of ceremonies.

Two admission prices offer choices on how guests want to experience the evening. A $50 general admission ticket will provide small bites from the amazing food sponsors of the event along with one complimentary serving of beer or wine. Guests purchasing reserved admission for $100 will be seated at tables as they enjoy the food tastings and two complimentary beverages in a private area with access to a private bar.

Alumni wanted for Keller Drill Team 50th anniversary event Sept. 17

Thousands of high kicks and heel digs later, the Keller Indianettes will celebrate their 50th anniversary with an Alumni Tea at Keller High School at 1 p.m. Sept. 17. Event organizers are searching for all former drill team members to join in the festivities and enjoy a stroll (no dancing required) down memory lane.

After beginning with only three officers and 16 line members in 1967, the team has grown to 15 officers, five honor guards and 52 line members, says spokeswoman Marsha Long, who estimates that around 2,000 girls have been in the Indianettes.

The team dances at pep rallies, sports events and charity games during the school year as well as competing in regional and national drill team dance competitions. The 2015-16 Indianettes claimed a pom-and-kick national championship.

“We will be celebrating 50 years of traditions and dedication to our school, our community and each other,” Long said. “It will be a fun-filled opportunity to reminisce with old friends and for alumni to share their wisdom and experiences with the next team.”

In charge of the event are team director Christie Panno and assistant director Shelly Waggoner. Guests will see a slide show and photo display of special moments from the past 50 years and enjoy raffle drawings and giveaways. And of course, this year’s Indianettes will regale the audience with some of their amazing routines.

“Over the years the Indianettes have won numerous awards and titles, but we are especially proud to announce that our 2016-17 team was selected out of 397 drill teams from across the country to dance in the opening number and march in the 2017 Rose Bowl parade in Pasadena, Calif.,” Long said.

Fashion show Saturday will help the poor

A luncheon and fashion show at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Christopher Episcopal Church promises to provide a fun afternoon for guests while raising money for a really good cause. Hosted by local nonprofit Christian Community Assistance, the event will also feature raffle drawings, door prizes, live entertainment and moving testimonials.

CCA serves local folks who are experiencing emergencies, hardship, loss of employment, temporary loss of scheduled benefits, the injury-disabled and parolees.

“The board of directors is working very hard to continue our mission of helping the poor of Fort Worth and recently-released parolees by raising funds to meet the multitude of responsibilities that face our organization,” said spokesman Paul Galvan, who volunteers for the organization. “This will be our main fundraiser of the year.”

Hardworking committee members include Carolyn Law, Vivian Scott and Linda Jo Galvan. Sharing emcee duties will be Vivian Scott and Margaret Meuili.

Guests will shop a silent auction, hear testimonials from several clients and see a video depicting a typical day for CCA. Cynthia Alvarez will cater a delicious lunch assisted by student interns from TCU. Singer Pauline Parish from Bethlehem Baptist Church in Ennis will perform.

Galvan said volunteers will model donated clothing including designer labels and name brands brought in by sponsor churches. “We will have evening gowns, a fur coat, casual wear, Sunday and professional business wear, and elementary through high school apparel. We even have one baby who will be in the style show.”

‘Calendar Girls’ continues through Sunday at Theatre Arlington

Theatre Arlington concludes its season on a high note with a presentation of the humorous and heartwarming play Calendar Girls. The play runs through Sunday. Based on a true story, the plot revolves around a group of British women who produce a calendar of nude photographs of themselves to raise money for leukemia research.

Theatre Arlington executive Kim Lawson astutely points out that this show about women is also directed and stage-managed by women and is presented by an organization led by women (Lawson along with Executive Director Valerie Galloway and Cindy Honeycutt, education director). Even the opening-night party was hosted by a woman-owned restaurant, JR Bentley’s.

Lawson’s musings on how women rock expanded to also point out that the downtown Arlington arts community boasts many female leaders including Patti Diou and Cathy O’Neal from the Levitt, Persis Ann Forster from Dance Theatre Arlington and Arlington Museum of Art board Chairwoman Nancy Tice. Nothing against the outstanding guys helping to shape Arlington’s art scene, but just sayin’.

Notable, however, is that women and men alike will find Calendar Girls enjoyable. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $23. Purchase online at www.TheatreArlington.org or call the box office at 817-275-7661.

Chalk Art Festival is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday on West Seventh Street near University Drive. Three commissioned street-painting artists will create colorful visual masterpieces from chalk throughout the event. Amateurs are invited to apply to create 4-foot by 4-foot chalk art on-site. The event will feature an area for children to create their own chalk drawings. Admission is free, and a portion of activity proceeds will benefit the Art Station, a nonprofit organization offering individual and group art therapy and community programs for children and adults.
