Where to see snow and ice in DFW

The temperatures may be in the 70s but that doesn’t mean you and your family should miss out on a fun time in the snow or skating on ice. Here are some chances you won’t want to miss:

The Frosty Snowhill at Six Flags Over Texas

During the holidays, Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington is transformed into a winter wonderland of activities including the Frosty Snowhill. Children can ride on the sled by themselves or with a parent (recommended for your younger kids). It’s a fun way to get a taste of the North Pole.

Good to know: Other holiday touches include the SantaLand Express train, Storytime with Mrs. Claus, hands-on holiday crafts, and a meet-and-greet with Santa’s reindeer.

When: 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., through Sunday, January 3 except for Saturday, December 26 when the park will be open from noon to 10 p.m. The park will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas.

Mini snow landscapes at the Trains at NorthPark

View more than 4,000 square feet of train-themed environments including mini versions of the State Fair of Texas and downtown Dallas. Train enthusiasts will be enthralled by the display.

Good to know: Proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill or injured children.

When: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday through January 3.

Where: Second Level near Nordstrom at NorthPark Center, North Central Expressway at Northwest Highway Dallas, TX 75225

Cost: $7, adults; $3, children ages 2 to 12



Ice skating at Panther Island Ice

Fort Worth’s only outdoor skating rink is open 7 days a week, including all holidays. The rink is a great way for novices and experts to slide around in an open-air environment.

Good to know: After the skating, children can also run around in the adjacent playground. Plus, you can enjoy seasonal food and beverages from the Coyote Canteen under tent-covered table area.

When: Open Monday through Sunday including all holidays through January 18. Check web site for hours.

Where: Panther Island Ice is found within the Coyote Drive-In complex at 223 NE 4th Street, Fort Worth, TX 76164

Cost: $11 includes skate rental and tax; $9 for group of 15 or more or military or Tarrant County College students or faculty. On Star-Telegram Mondays, admission $9 per Star-Telegram Press Pass. On Food Drive Tuesdays, bring 2 canned goods to donate to Tarrant Area Food Bank to get $9 admission.



Snow flurries at Frisco’s Christmas in the Square

Every 15 minutes on Fridays and Saturdays through January 2, six snow machines on both sides of Coleman Boulevard blow a “snow mixture.” The snow flurries are created by the same machines used by Disney. Plus, don’t miss the choreographed holiday lights and music show 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly.

Good to know: There’s also an ice skating rink that will operate through January 3. Cost is $10 per person including skates.

When: Fridays and Saturdays through January 2

Where: Frisco Square, along Coleman Boulevard, Frisco, Texas

Cost: Free to watch flurries



Ice at Gaylord Texan Resort

Experience more than two million pounds of hand-carved ice sculptures during the Lone Star Christmas celebration at this Grapevine hotel. This year’s theme is “Christmas Around the World.” Participants are given special parkas to wear throughout the exhibit and don’t forget to slide down the ice slide.

Good to know: Snow tubing is also available in the resort and there are combo tickets available for both ICE exhibit and the snow tubing.
