Appliance rebate program running smoothly, official says

Texas' latest appliance rebate program, which kicked off Monday, is "going really well," said Allen Spelce of the Texas comptroller's office.

That's a nice contrast to an April program, which frustrated thousands who couldn't get through online or by phone to reserve rebates.

In the new program, offering $18.5 million in rebates for energy-efficient appliances with the federal Energy Star certification, "the calls and inquiries have been ... manageable," Spelce said.

The new mail-in rebate system eliminated a "gold rush mentality that you had to get in immediately," he said.

Rebates range from $40 to $1,000, depending on the appliance.

The program ends when all the money is distributed.
