Spring-like day forecast for Dallas-Fort Worth

What a difference a week can make.

Last Thursday, North Texas began receiving a record-breaking foot of snow.

But today, the weather will be spring-like, mostly sunny, with high temperatures in the low 60s, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

It will stay that warm through the weekend, although clouds will start to develop Friday, followed by increasing chances for rain Saturday and Sunday, and cooler temperatures next week.

Jennifer Dunn, weather service meteorologist, on Thursday described how we got from snow storms to springtime in seven days.

First, North Texas was hit last week by an active pattern of storm systems, she said. This week, however, the the upper levels of the atmosphere have been "zonal," and flowing west to east.

"So," she said, "the cold air hasn't dipped down. The cold air is being kept in the northern plains."

Instead, warmer air from the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean has been drifting into Texas.

Thursday is expected to be the nicest day with sunshine and a projected high of about 63 degrees. It will be about 63 again on Friday, but with some clouds.

The zonal flow will start to break down, Dunn said, and on Saturday, a little system of low pressure moves into Oklahoma and brings a cold front with it.

The southerly winds already will have returned moisture to North Texas, bringing a 20 percent chance for showers on Saturday and 40 percent on Sunday, Dunn said.

She noted, however, that the best chances for rain will be east of the Metroplex because that's where the next low pressure system will be located. No rain is expected Monday or Tuesday.

But, Dunn added, "we'll see a drop on Monday to the low 50s and Tuesday will be in the high 40s." Nighttime lows both days will range from the mid to 30s.

After starting the week cold, there will be a gradual warm-up, Dunn said.

"But we're also watching another system that could bring a chance of rain next week," she said.
