Girl on skates struck by pickup in north Fort Worth, police say

A 14-year-old girl on inline skates was hurt early Wednesday when she was struck by a pickup in north Fort Worth.

The incident was reported at about 8 a.m. at the intersection of Basswood Boulevard and Buttonwood Drive, according to police dispatch records.

The girl was taken to Cook Children's Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, said Sgt. Chad Mahaffey, police spokesman.

It happened as the girl, a student at Fossil Hill Middle School, was skating north on Buttonwood, Mahaffey said.

He added that she was on her way to school, which is about a half-mile north of the intersection.

A 35-year-old man who was eastbound on Basswood was stopped at the intersection, but as he proceeded, the sun partially obstructed his view and he didn't see the girl, Mahaffey said.

She was then struck by the Nissan Frontier, Mahaffey said.

Investigating officers chose not to issue a citation, Mahaffey said.
