Fort Worth, Arlington among districts canceling Friday classes

Arlington, Fort Worth, Birdville, Hurst-Euless-Bedford, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw, Keller and Mansfield schools are among those who have canceled school on Friday, officials have said.

School started on time at area schools on Thursday, but as weather conditions worsened, administrators began to halt classes and canceled athletic practices, games and after school activities.

University of Texas at Arlington announced at 2:25 p.m. that the campus would close at 3 p.m.

School districts kept parents abreast on the changing weather conditions on their Web sites, using telephone notification services and social networking updates including Twitter feeds.

Meanwhile, campuses in Arlington, Birdville and Mansfield school districts reported power outages on Thursday.

Electrical service was lost at Birdville’s Haltom Middle School early Thursday. It was restored only to be lost later on. Students were relocated to the Thomas Coliseum where staffers waited with them until they were picked up by parents, said Birdville spokesman Mark Thomas.
