Calendar of events

Events scheduled to celebrate the life and legacy of civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.:


10 a.m.: Fort Worth’s MLK Kids’ Parade and Lunch, sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and other groups. The parade goes from Parkway Elementary School, 1320 W. Everman Parkway, to the Sycamore Center Villas at the new ROOTS Go Center, 2901 Chandra Lane. All proceeds will help establish a sustaining fund for the ministries at the villas and beyond. 817-293-9933.

10 a.m.-2 p.m.: MLK Day of Service. Volunteers will join faith-based partners across Arlington to help make a difference in neighborhoods. To participate, call 817-277-2634.

11 a.m.: Fort Worth’s Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Parade featuring marching bands, floats and decorated vehicles. The parade starts at Commerce and 15th streets, heads north on Commerce, west on Ninth Street, north on Main Street, west on First Street and south on Houston Street, and ends at the Fort Worth Water Gardens.

2 p.m.: The Weatherford/Parker County NAACP’s 18th annual MLK Jr. Day Celebration, Shirley Hall Middle School, 902 Charles St., Weatherford. Speakers include: Jack Borden, Weatherford attorney; Mariana Lopez-Rosas, Weatherford High School senior; Maj. Shalonda Horton, clinical nursing instructor at the University of Texas at Austin; Erma Johnson Hadley, interim chancellor at Tarrant County College.

6:30 p.m.: Sharing the Dream Musical Youth Extravaganza, Fielder Road Baptist Church Metro Center, 1323 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington. Free.


7 p.m.: Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration featuring review and analysis of the book No More Excuses by Terry Evans. Celebration, hosted by Christian Community Church, is at The Dock Bookshop, 6637 Meadowbrook Drive, Fort Worth.
