Firefly Aerospace's defense business grows as subsidiary snags Air Force contract
A defense subsidiary of Firefly Aerospace Inc. has scored a deal to be one of the U.S. Air Force's data fusion system providers.
SciTec Inc. won a $5.5 million contract to provide its data management and fusion system to the Air Force's modern battle management platform. Data fusion is the process of integrating multiple data sources to provide more consistent information.
The deal is part of an earlier $24 million award to advance and modernize the battle management system used by the Air Force, a program known as the Cloud-Based Command and Control program.
Firefly acquired SciTec in October for $855 million. The Cedar Park-based aerospace firm has been increasing its defense contract business, which is now largely coming via New Jersey-based SciTec.
SciTec specializes in missile tracking and defense technology, creating platforms for agencies to manage and plan battles and acquire data. Founded in Princeton, N.J., in 1979, it develops sensor systems and algorithms used in missile defense, surveillance and military applications. The company employs nearly 500 people, most of whom hold security clearances.
The new contract comes shortly after Firefly beat out fellow aerospace companies for a highly sought-after drone contract with NASA.
The agency, in its pursuit of establishing a base on the moon's south pole within the next few years, awarded Firefly $75 million to deliver drones to the moon. The announcement was part of a slew of contracts from NASA, which is buying up landers, drones and rovers for future base.
Ahead of its acquisition last year, SciTec also landed a $259 million U.S. Space Force contract to build cyber-secure ground processing technologies.
