About the candidate: Brittan, who has lived in Westlake for about four years, said he wants to preserve the small-town, rural feel of the community and ensure that development is responsible. He said his background in oil and gas will be instrumental in the board's work to write a new drilling ordinance.

Background: Maynard, who studied psychology at San Diego State University, launched Jayco Stamping Co. in Fort Worth in 1990. Maynard was appointed in December to replace an alderwoman who moved.
About the candidate: Maynard said his management experience is an asset. Now that the board has hired a new head of school and a town manager, the board is turning its attention to the town's oil and gas ordinance. Maynard said he wants to maintain the town's rural atmosphere and help lure new businesses.

Background: Rollins holds a master's degree in speech pathology from Teachers College at Columbia University in New York City and a bachelor's degree from Queens College, City University of New York. Rollins has served on the New York State Department of Education Preschool Special Education Advisory Committee and the Schenectady County Local Early Intervention Community Council.
About the candidate: Rollins said she is interested in preserving the town's rural quality and lack of a property tax and wants to secure an extra water supply. She wants to make sure the school board understands Texas education law and engages parents, staff, students and community members in decision making.

Background: Steger has a bachelor's degree in marketing and management from the University of Wisconsin. He was elected to a one-year, unexpired seat on the board in May 2007.
About the candidate: He said he wants to help in the transitions of the new town manager and head of school, whom helped choose. Steger said he feels it is important for the town to have consistent leadership to continue the progress set by former leaders. Steger said he wants to help maintain the town's rural feel.
Uncontested races
Laura Wheat is running unopposed for the mayor's seat, which is being vacated by Scott Bradley after seven terms. Wheat is the board president of Gilda's Club Worldwide, a nonprofit support organization for people with cancer. Her term will expire in May 2010.
Carol Langdon is unopposed in a special election to fill an unexpired term on the board of aldermen. Her term will expire in May 2009.
