Background: Tolbert said he spent 19 years in college, including Austin College in Sherman and Texas Tech University, where he received a business degree. He said he has been in the mortgage business for 30 years, including as an executive vice president for Lomas Mortgage USA.

About the candidate: He said that he has shown leadership during the last six months as mayor, including signing an oil and gas lease that can bring in "a huge amount of money."

Name: Larry Leach (incumbent)

Background: Leach says he completed high school and then worked a number of jobs, including restaurant manager and owner, owner of an Internet service provider and sales manager.

About the candidate: Leach says his background is diverse, giving him a good balance of people skills, leadership, finance and, most of all, a concern for others. He said he believes in giving back to the community and was a community activist before being appointed to the City Council.

Background: Rogers said he quit high school after the 11th grade to support his family and has lived in Pelican Bay since 1992.

About the candidate: He said that he has always tried to help his family, friends and community, saying that he was raised to work hard seven days a week.

Name: Missy Clark (incumbent)

Age: 39

Occupation: Account manager for a medical carrier

Background: Clark graduated from high school in Olney and attended Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. She has worked in insurance for eight years. She was appointed to her council seat in September.

About the candidate: Clark says she feels that she brings a genuine interest and truly cares about Pelican Bay and its residents. She said her vision for Pelican Bay is basically the same as those who already live there -- it's a great place to raise her child, and it's a safe, caring community.

Name: M.E. Haggard

Age: 71

Occupation: Retired, boilermaker for 35 years, superintendent for two construction companies

Background: Haggard has lived in Pelican Bay for three years; his wife has lived there for 17 years. He attended college for two years. This is his first run for office.

About the candidate: Haggard said he works hard at everything he does and wants to improve the city, including its streetlights and roads.

Name: Marlyn Hawkins

Occupation: Retired as an operation analyst for Burlington Northern Santa Fe and IBM

Background: Hawkins said he has lived in Pelican Bay for 35 years, served on City Council three times since the 1980s, was mayor pro tem and was elected mayor in 2004.

About the candidate: Hawkins said he knows what the city needs because he has served on the council before.

Background: Tynes graduated from high school. He served in the Army National Guard for 36 years and retired at the rank of sergeant first class. He moved to Pelican Bay from Paradise about a year ago. This is his first run for office.

About the candidate: Tynes said he has a lot of experience in administration. He was in charge of coordinating the organization, training and movement of 400 people.
